An explanation of CounsellingFreud called it 'The Talking Cure'... Anyone, at one time or another, may feel that life seems temporarily overwhelming. Many people find that counselling can help.
Counselling is an opportunity to tell your story and explore any distress you might be experiencing in a safe, confidential place. The role of the counsellor is to listen and help you dig deeper so you may understand what is going on in your life and why.
It is not the task of the counsellor to advise you, nor to tell you what to do or to judge your past or present actions, but to empower you to make the right decisions that are right for you.
I adhere to the Ethical Framework for Good Practice as set out by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. According to that ethical framework all counsellors are required to receive supervision for counselling work. This is for the safety and benefit of the client so she/he may receive the best service possible. The name of the client is never given to the supervisor.
The first appointment is an assessment session lasting 60 minutes. This gives you a chance to tell the counsellor about yourself and what you hope to get out of counselling. At this session the time and day of future sessions and the fee will be agreed. The duration of each subsequent session will be 50 minutes. |
